It’s almost a routine here on Sundays now. Their was the usual noisy baseball so we escaped to the kids park and a soccer game. When we first arrived at the kids park it was quiet, but they quickly realized this and cranked up some kids music for us.

This time we remembered to take some pictures of the park so you can check it out. I have to admit it is pretty nice, especially considering the free admission.

The soccer game today was a bit wild. It poured just before our game so the field was soaked and I play without cleats. There were some heated tempers and one of our players even left the field. Originally I thought it was going to be easier playing in the cool temperature after the rain but the high humidity seemed to make it worse than playing in the hot sun. I felt like I had gained an extra 20 lbs.

I don’t mean to harp on the language, but I did have another interesting Spanish experience tonight. Like last week, we decided to grab some fried chicken after the game. I’ve found that some people seem to recognize that my Spanish is weak and they will simplify their language. The odd person will even slow down, although that’s pretty rare. The lady at the stand tonight took the opportunity to practice her speed-speech, or at least that’s what it sounded like to me. Then, when I would ask her to repeat something, she would always rephrase it. Unfortunately I needed to hear the same sentence a couple times so I could figure out all the words. It was especially amusing (for them) trying to negotiate the price. I thought she said a lower number and as I tried to figure out what she actually wanted, rather than just telling me the total, she seemed to be saying things like “you are xxx short”, or “just give me xxx more”, or “I had to charge you xx extra for the ketchup”, or “you are a complete lunatic to be here by yourself trying to order chicken with such a small vocabulary”, but never the same thing twice. Clearly I provided the entertainment for the evening.

On a less humorous note, both the kids appear to be catching some type of cold today. We put Ariana to bed with a mild temperature, and they have both had runny noses all day. The joys.

I’ve been meaning to update you on the noise the last two nights. We’ve found out that the first night, Friday evening, the impromptu marching band was to celebrate a local basketball team who had won a big tournament. Last night was simply a birthday party.

Ciara

Ciara

I’ll end with a couple quotes we’ve collected from Ciara lately. The first occurred yesterday after we had some resistance about cleaning up her toys. Our final decision was that she would have to clean up her polly-pockets by herself. After finally accepting this, she tearfully said “I wish I had a Daddy who would say ‘I will help you clean up'”, and then “I wish my Grandma was here, the one who says ‘I will help you clean up'”.

The second quote is from tonight, after she saw a moth and asked me what they eat. She obviously didn’t like my response because she replied “No they don’t, they eat pom-e-gran-ates.” Not too shabby for a two year old although it took her a bit of work to get it all out. Where did she come up with pomegranates anyhow?
